Ah, I should talk more on this... Even though school work has been busy. A lot of writing to do-- which I guess I don't mind, but it takes up a lot of time.

The... person I know on here-- they went ahead and showed me a bunch of older tournaments for Duel Monsters that they had on video, since they got brought up recently. Like, stuff from back when the game just started getting really popular.

Geeze... They really didn't know what they wanted the game to be yet, did they? It's kinda weird to watch them, when I've only really got somewhat of a grasp on the rules right now.

Yeah, though it makes it weird that a lot of teenagers and adults play Duel Monsters, and even use it as a cornerstone for things.

Well... You mentioned that "Magic" is marketed towards an older demographic, right?

Duel Monsters and Vanguard are traditionally marketed towards kids. Like, middle school level.

So why is it that there're highschools and other schools like that focus on teaching dueling? Why do businesses put a lot of focus on it, to the point where having a sponsor duelist is actually pretty important? It even seems like, in my own research, that a lot of rich folks get into having their kids learn dueling professionally as a demonstrative thing. It's something I've kinda wondered when it comes to the real focus of the game.

Like why did all of this happen?

Battle City is the likely reason.

Kaiba's tournament skyrocketed the game from cult classic to mainstream. Somehow he managed to convince wealthy families it was prestigious to make Dueling important.

It's like asking

"Why do contact sports become huge". They just sort of due, due to viral marketing.

Hnm... Well, I guess I can see why Battle City would do that.

That seemed like a really major thing, while I was watching it. But I guess the impact otherwise is kinda lost on me, since I never really experienced it.

That's probably a major difference. For a lot of people here, it was very inspirational when they were children, seeing Osiris and Obelisk trade blows.

Yeah, I saw the video of that... Osiris and Obelisk are pretty much legendary-status cards, right?

Yes. One-ofs, and they vanished within a year or so after appearing.

Why, though? Why'd they vanish?

All sorts of rumors exist.

They were fake cards.

They were too dangerous to mass produce.

They got dropped in a sewer.

They were lost in Egypt.

And how can cards be too dangerous? ... Oh, wait, right, there was that thing with that Sarameya card. Right. Nevermind.

That's the rumor.

And there are rumors of cards that I2 produces, that automatically have damage safeties fail due to some sort of poor programming.

Though some rumors claim other cards attract magic.

Attract magic.

Well, I guess if anything would... It's still kinda weird sometimes for me to think about.

You just get used to it, honestly, slowly.
